The Nis Fortress, located on the banks of the Nisava River, in the city center, is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved buildings of Turkish military architecture in the middle Balkans. From the Romans over the Byzantines, Slavs, Bulgarians and Serbs destroyed and rebuilt many times to its final appearance in 1723, when it was built by the Turks at the end of his reign this area. It was built in the area of more than 22 hectares, with ramparts 2100 meters long and 8 meters high, with an average width of 3 meters.
The Nis Fortress is a town fortress in the center of Nis on the right bank of Nisava, which has a continuity of about two millennia of constant existence, as evidenced by numerous archeological findings. According to its present state, is one of the best preserved fortifications of this type in Serbia and the Balkan Peninsula. In addition to being a historical and cultural center of Niš, the fortress is also a kind of oasis of greenery in the city center.
