Niš is the largest city in southeastern Serbia and the headquarters of the Nisava Administrative District. It is located 237 kilometers southeast of Belgrade on the river Nisava, near its confluence with the South Morava River.
Niš was an administrative, military and trade center of various states and empires, which, during its long history, belonged. In the area of today's Nis, Roman Emperors Constantine the Great and Constantius III were born in the ancient city of Nais. The geographical position of Niš has made it a strategically important and thus an inviting city for many conquerors. Throughout history, the territory that is today the city was passed by Dardanians, Thracians, Illyrians, Celts, Romans, Huns, Avars, and later the Byzantines, Serbs, Bulgarians and Ottomans. On several occasions the town was occupied by the Hungarians and the Austrians. The influence of the different nations living on the territory of today's city of Niš is noticed in the cultural heritage of the city.
