Saint Vasilije Ostroški (Jovanović) was born in the village of Mrkonjići, Popovo Polje in Herzegovina, in the Republic of Srpska. When he grew up, he went to the Trebinje monastery of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God and became a monk there.
