The baptismal cloth is white and symbolizes purity and innocence. It is most often made of quality material such as cotton, silk or satin, but it can also be made of other materials such as lace, organic cotton or hemp canvas.
The baptism cloth in the Orthodox Church has an important symbolic role in the baptism ceremony. This cloth is usually placed over the baptismal font or near it and is used to receive the newly baptized child.
After the solemn rite begins, the priest will perform the rite of prayer and then immerse the child three times in the water in the baptismal font, while all the people present in the church silently pray and welcome the new member of the Christian community. After the child is immersed, the priest will wrap him in a baptismal cloth, symbolizing spiritual transformation and a new beginning.
The baptismal cloth is often decorated and embellished to reflect the symbolism and seriousness of the rite, and its use marks the child's transition into a new spiritual state as a Christian. The cloth is kept and usually given to the child's parents as a lasting memento of this special day.
