Janko Vukotić was serdar of the Montenegrin army, prime minister, minister of war and chief of staff of the Supreme Command of the Kingdom of Montenegro, adjutant general of King Nikola, army general, member of the Military Council and adjutant of King Alexander I Karađorđević in the army of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
In the First Balkan War, he commanded the Eastern Detachment, and in the Second Balkan War, he was the head of the division. At the beginning of the First World War, he was the head of the Montenegrin Supreme Command, then the commander of the Herzegovina detachment and the Sandžak army. He was reappointed as the head of the Supreme Command on January 17, 1916. After the capitulation of the Montenegrin army, he was taken prisoner. In 1919, he was accepted into the Yugoslav army, and in 1926 he was promoted to the rank of army general.
