Živela je tihim i povučenim životom nižeg engleskog plemstva 18. veka. Predano i marljivo je učila i usavršavala svoj literarni talenat. Za života je bila nepoznata, da bi nakon smrti njene knjige postale jedne od najčitanijih u svetskoj istoriji književnosti.
