VESNA
Vesna is the goddess of spring and youth among the Slavs. It is popular among the people because it replaces the rule of winter and death, i.e. Morana, it brings joy, green fields, buds and flowering, pleasant weather more suitable for life and work. Vesna is a victorious goddess. She conquers death and winter, and brings her rule to nature. With its round body, lush bust and ravishing hips, it is clearly associated with youth, love and fertility.
Vesna's divine pair is Stribog. According to legend, he brings Vesna every spring on the wings of the wind. Of the holidays that celebrate the goddess of spring, the Slavs celebrated Mladence, the holiday of spouses who had married in the previous year, with the desire to have a child, and for this purpose they kneaded honey cookies. Another Vesna holiday that has been held to this day is Cveti, while during the flowering of the willows, children are decorated with willow fringes, and bells are placed around their necks to symbolize spring lambs. This rite also kept its name in Christianity, and its name is Vrbica. Likewise, in the spring, eggs were painted, usually in red, which symbolized the sun, fire and warmth, which Vesna brought with her arrival. Eggs together with bread and wine were presented to the host of the house. One red egg was placed next to the household idol, for good luck and health in the family, and was kept until the next year.
Among the animals, the people identified Vesna with the swallow, which is also the harbinger of spring, it was considered lucky if the swallow nests under the roof of the house.
Vesna is a very common female name among the Slavic peoples.
