VELES, GOD OF THE FOREST AND ANIMALS
The Veles cult is strong and distinct. Besides Perun, he is the only Slavic deity respected by all Slavic peoples, especially among the Balkan and Carpathian Slavs. Veles is an earthly deity, patron of herdsmen and farmers, in charge of crops, fields and animals, wild and domestic. Whatever the Slavs did, they depended on Veles. He is represented as a strong young man with buffalo horns, but also as a gray-haired old man with a long beard and a stick in his hand. As the God of beasts, he is represented in the form of a bear, which among the Slavs was a symbol of the forest king who took care of animals, forest fruits, as well as the forest itself. It is celebrated at the time of sowing, harvesting and grazing. Spiritual forces also belonged to Veles: dragons and ale, and cult places, in addition to temples, were: fields, pastures, corrals, burial grounds and cemeteries. The rites consisted of masquerade, vučar (imitation wolves) and vows. His symbol was a stick, and he was symbolized by: grass, wolf, bear, black rooster and domestic animals.
The wooden statue of Veles was carved with figures of a cow, a plow and a winged lion with an eagle's head. The lion (dragon) had a lily flower on the tip of its tail. Veles' clothing is lavish - as befits the patron saint of cattlemen. The beard of Veles is represented by an ear of wheat.
Veles is also the protector of contracts and given words, like Perun, the Slavs swore and swore to respect the agreements agreed by Perun and Veles. Also, he is the protector of magic and wisdom, but also of music, which is closely related to magic.
