The Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, one of the greatest Christian saints, protector of travelers, sailors, fishermen and rafters. St. Nicholas is also celebrated on May 22, in memory of the day when his relics were transferred from Mira in Lycia to the then Orthodox Bari, Italy, in 1096, and laid in the Church of St. John the Baptist, which soon became a gathering place for pilgrims. Three years later, the citizens of Bari built a magnificent church in honor of St. Nicholas.
Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myrlikia, is celebrated throughout Christendom.
