Novi Sad is located in the southern part of Europe, in Serbia, between the 19th and 20th degrees of the eastern geographical longitude and 45th and 46th degrees of northern latitude. Novi Sad is the capital of Vojvodina and the second largest city in Serbia. It covers two municipalities: Novi Sad and Petrovaradin, which have about 300,000 inhabitants with suburban settlements. The city lies on the left bank of the Danube River. Founded in 1694. The first inhabitants of the city were soldiers with service in the Petrovaradin fortress and the intendants that were used for the needs of the then garrison. On February 1, 1748 Emperor Maria Theresa decided to make the city a free royal town and to name the city of Novi Sad. The name of the city of Novi Sad means a new plantation (garden). Novi Sad today is a large industrial and financial center of the Serbian economy, a university city and one of the largest construction sites in the region. Photo by puzzle was done by Bojan Hohnjec.
