On the Petrovaradin rock there was a human settlement in the young stone age, around 4500 BC. One hundred years before Christ, the area of Petrovaradin is inhabited by the Celts, which are replaced by the Romans for two centuries.
In the composition of the great Roman Empire there was only the territory of the right bank of the Danube, while the spaces on the left side of the Danube were inhabited by the Varvarian tribes of the Sarmatian Jaziga.
Soon, the Jazigi become very powerful and are increasingly organizing the robbery of the Roman Danube Provinces. In order to protect their border, the Romans along the right bank of the Danube built a series of fortifications connected to the defense system, and one of them was Kuzum (Cusum), built on the site of today's Petrovaradin fortress.
The remains of the Roman Kuzum are now covered with the walls of the Fortress, but there are enough historical monuments from that time in the area
