The first Catholic church in Novi Sad from the first decades of the 18th century was a modest, temporary building that was demolished in 1742. A new one was built in the same place. The Catholic Archbishop Gabor Patačić revengeed the new church in 1742. In the bombing of June 12, 1849, she was burned down and her tower was demolished. In the later renovation, the original tower was not completely reconstructed. The Novi Sad Catholics were not pleased with the outcome, so they gave an initiative in the City Assembly to raise such a one that would suit Novi Sad as a free royal city.
Also, in the bridge on the bank of the Danube ("Brukšanac"), there was a church of St. John Nepomuk, which was destroyed during the construction of the access Bridge of the Prince Tomislav and the Boulevard of Queen Mary (today's Bulevar Mihaila Pupina) (1928).
