Belgrade is one of the oldest cities on the territory of Europe. The first settlements on the territory of Belgrade date back to the prehistoric Vinca, even 4,800 years before the new era, and Belgrade itself founded the Celts in the 3rd century BC, before becoming the Roman settlement Singidunum. Singidunum was conquered by many conquerors such as Hun, Ostrogot, Šarmat and Avar, until the arrival of Slovenia around 630 AD. The first records on the Slovenian name of Belgrade date back to 878. The city lies at the confluence of the Sava River in the Danube in the northern part of central Serbia and the river is practically threatened by the river on three sides. Due to this position it is rightly called the "gate of the Balkans" and "the door of Central Europe". It is also a place where the Pannonian Plain connects with the Balkan Peninsula at 44 ° 49'14 "north latitude and 20 ° 27'44" east longitude. The length of the river banks of Belgrade is about 200 km from its 16 islands, the largest of which are two: Ada Ciganlija and Veliko Ratno ostrvo. City of Belgrade has about 1.8 mil. inhabitants and is one of the largest cities of Southeast Europe. The historical core of Belgrade (today's Belgrade Fortress) is located on the right bank of the Sava River. Within Belgrade are Novi Beograd and Zemun, which are on the left bank of the Sava River, and therefore in Central Europe. Belgrade today is the largest industrial and financial center of the Serbian economy, the university city and the center of Serbian culture.
