In its rich fund, Belgrade City Museum holds especially valuable collection of engravings, images of Belgrade made from the sixteenth to the last years of the nineteenth century. They were made in the major economic and graphic centers of Europe - in Vienna, Augsburg, Nuremberg, Leipzig, Amsterdam... Almost four centuries, the most famous European artists and engravers cut the cheeks of Belgrade. After the restoration of Serbian statehood in the nineteenth century, engravings were printed in the workshops of the Serbian capital.
Collection of engravings of the Museum of the City of Belgrade, except that it has undoubted artistic value, and represents an extremely valuable source of information about the layout and topography of Belgrade from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, but also a first-class document for the history of the city of Belgrade and Serbia. It can be said that without the selected samples from this collection of engravings can not be seen in the right light all views in the history of the Danube region, but not in Central Europe at that time.
Some authors and publishers are devoting Belgrade illustrated monographs and albums, but most of the graphic works created mainly in the form of individual sheets in large atlases, world history and lead wars, in the often repeated editions of famous European graphic and cartographic workshops and publishing houses.
The painting depicts the engraving of Melchior Haffner that was in 1684 in Augsburg released by Jakob Kompajer and is located in the first volume (of two) works Delineatio Provinciarum Pannoniae et Empire turcica in Oriente by Johann Christoph Wagner. The aforementioned work was so popular in European public during the Great Viennese War (1683-1699) that had two more editions - in 1685 and 1687.
