Justinian I (Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Iustinianus) was born in Taurezum, 28 km from today's Leskovac (the archaeological site of Empress Town). He is known as the last Roman and first Byzantine Emperor, Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire and Orthodox theologian. He sought to restore the power, size, and organization of the Roman Empire, which had been fragmented by the internal turmoil and the decline of the barbarians, of the people who penetrated the territory of the Western Roman Empire. He abolished all non-Christian philosophical schools, including the Plato's Academy. He called the Fifth Ecumenical Council in an effort to reconcile monophysites with the Orthodox. He is also considered one of the greatest codifiers of all Roman law.
