Duke Momcilo or Sevastokrator Momcilo was a Serbian robber and feudal ruler of the Western Rhodope, from the first half of the 14th century. At the beginning he was a member of the bandit group on the borders of Bulgaria, Byzantium and Serbia. Thanks to his opportunistic participation in the civil war in Byzantium, in which he fought on all sides, he became the ruler of a large part of Rhodope and western Thrace.
Momcilo had at the beginning success in fighting both the Ottomans and the Byzantines, burning Turkish ships, and he almost managed to kill one of his main opponents at the time, John VI Cantacuzino. Despite this, he was defeated and killed by a combined Byzantine-Ottoman army in 1345 at the Battle of Perterion. Due to his courage and the fight against the Turks, Duke Momcilo was ennobled in the folk songs of the Serbs and Bulgarians as a fighter against the Turkish conquest of the Balkans.
