Theodore was the wife of Byzantine emperor Justinian I and his closest adviser and associate over twenty years. However, thanks to Prokopi's "Secret History" Theodore is primarily remembered as a courtesan who ascended to the imperial throne.
As empress, Theodore turned out to be very capable and, according to historical sources, made a big impact on Justinian's reforms. She worked the most on women's rights. Thus, a law prohibiting forced prostitution was introduced. In addition, Theodore expanded the legal ability of women to divorce, mothers were given greater authority over children, the killing of adulterers was prohibited, and capital punishment was imposed for rape.
