One of the first Serbian medieval monasteries to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Studenica Monastery near Kraljevo, which is also considered one of the largest Serbian medieval monasteries.
Historical records indicate that the Studenica monastery near Kraljevo is endowment of Stefan Nemanja, and that the monastery was built in 1190. The monastery complex consists of: a church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as Our Lady's Church, St. Joachim and Anna Church, also known as the King's Church and St. Nicholas Church, dedicated to St. Nicholas.
When the mayor of the monastery, the great mayor Stefan Nemanja relinquished his throne, he retired to the Studenica monastery. Then he went the way of the Hilandar monastery in Mount Athos, in which he became a monk, named Simeon. In the same monastery he soon died, at the hands of his youngest son, the monk Sava, the latter Saint Sava.
