The Ravanica Monastery, with a church dedicated to the Holy Ascension of the Lord, was built by Saint Prince Lazar between the seventies and eighties of the 14th century. In an old manuscript, he writes: "He erected from the ground a temple in honor of the Ascension of the Lord, very high and beautiful, and established it on four pillars, and illuminated it with paintings ... decorate it with gold and ordinary ornament; endow it richly with various vessels of silver and gilded ... Encompass it with the city and fortify it with seven towers; build a dining room ... build cells and attach them to the wall like bird's nests ... Build another temple lying on the east side in the foothills of that place ... and build hospitals for sick monks, strangers and the weak. "
