The Holy Imperial Serbian Lavra Hilandar is located on Mount Athos (Άγιον Όρος, Agion Oros), an autonomous monastic community in northern Greece, on the eastern tip of the Halkidiki Peninsula. Hilandar is the fourth in the hierarchy of the monasteries of Mount Athos and one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers of the Serbian people. It was founded on the ruins of an older monastery in 1198 by monks of extraordinary reputation, the former great mayor Stefan Nemanja (1166 - 1196) and his youngest son Rastko, the same ones who created an independent medieval state and an autocephalous Serbian Church. In the long history of Serbia, his monks played a significant role, since the close ties of their monastery with their mother country remained lasting. A large share of the Hilandarians were also in the development of Serbian literature and art, and the most capable of them, at the request of the rulers, also came to occupy leading positions in the Serbian Church. The Holy Imperial Serbian Lavra Hilandar is still an important place of pilgrimage and represents the richest treasury and archive of the medieval heritage of the Serbian people. The monastery has been continuously inhabited since the 12th century and today has more than 50 monks.
