Био је најмлађи син великог жупана Стефана Немање и брат краљева Вукана и Стефана. Уз подршку васељенског патријарха је прогласио самосталност рашке цркве од Охридске архиепископије 1219. године и поставио темеље данашње Српске православне цркве. Од римског Папе је испословао краљевску круну и суверенитет за тадашњу Србију. Након крунисања брата Стефана 1221. године, радио је на јачању црквене организације, покрштавању "незнабожаца" и "јеретика" и искорењивању рашких богумила.
