In the Cathedral of Hilandar, beneath the altar, there is a miraculous icon of the Mother of God with three hands. Tradition has it that St. John of Damascus, the famous theologian, poet and icon admirer was slandered by the Caliph in Damascus. He was cruelly punished by cutting off his right hand. The impaired poet fell before the icon of the Most Holy Mother praying. That same night, his hand came back. When he saw the miraculous event the Caliph was overwhelmed by remorse and he wanted to return all dignity to John. However, he thanked and went to the monastery. From gratitude to the healer, he made silver relief of his hand, which he attached to the icon. That is when icon got the name of Trojeručica (Mother of God with three hands).
