Saint Basil the Great, known as Basil of Caesarea, was an influential theologian and bishop of Caesarea (Caesaria) in Cappadocia (Asia Minor). He is considered the founder of the universal monastic tradition in Eastern Christianity.
Shortly after his death, he was declared a saint: the Orthodox Church celebrates him on January 14, and the Roman Catholic Church on January 2. Basil the Great, his brother Gregory the Low, and his friend Gregory the Theologian are called the Cappadocian Church Fathers. Their mother is celebrated as Saint Emilia.
