Stefan Dečanski is one of the most tragic figures in the Nemanjić family. Between two military men, father Milutin and son Dusan, he spent his childhood as a hostage at the court of Khan Nogaj. As a young man he was blinded, probably on the orders of his father, and sent to prison in Constantinople. According to church teaching, after five years Saint Nicholas miraculously restored King Stefan's sight, who immediately built the Visoki Dečani temple out of gratitude, one of the most beautiful buildings of Byzantine art and medieval architecture on our soil. He also donated a large icon to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari. As a victim of court intrigues, he was killed in 1336, and it is assumed that his son did it.
Saint Stefan Dečanski is celebrated by many families in Serbia as the feast of baptism, popularly known as Mratindan. It was named after St. Martin, who used to be celebrated on this day. By church decision, the feast dedicated to the Serbian king was moved to this day. It is a sacred day for all those suffering from eye diseases. He is also considered the protector of wolves. People still hear the saying: "Saint Mrata, snow on the door", which marks the beginning of the cold and snowy period of the year.
