The apostle and evangelist Mark (John Mark) was the son of a wealthy woman Mary, who was a friend to Christians, one of the apostles (disciples) of Jesus Christ and the author of second gospel.
According to legend, his uncle, the Apostle Barnabas and the Apostle Paul, took him on an escort on his first missionary trip to Antioch. Later, with Uncle Barnabas, he went to Cyprus, and with the apostles Peter and Paul to Rome.
St. Peter appoints Mark as bishop and sends him to Misir to preach. Thus, St. Mark was the first preacher of the Gospel and the first bishop in Misir. He preached in Livia, Ammonia, and Pentapolis. From Pentapolis he moved to Alexandria. In Alexandria, St. Mark established the Church of God, appointed bishops, priests, and deacons.
The devotee considers him the founder of the Church in Alexandria. Tired of the Gentiles, he was buried in Alexandria. In 828, his body was stolen by Venetian merchants and translated to Venice, where his sarcophagus lies in St. Mark's Church today.
The Apostle Mark is a writer, by the time of writing, of the second gospel, which bears his name - the Holy Gospel of Mark.
