Elijah (Hebr. אליהו [Eliyahu]) was a 9th-century prophet of Israel. n. e. He is mentioned in the Talmud, the Bible and the Koran.
He was a native of Aronob of the city of Tesvit. According to tradition, when Elijah was born, his father Sabah saw around him angels wrapping him in fire and feeding him with flames, which was a sign of his flaming character and the power of fire. He spent his youth in deep thought and prayer, often in the desert.
The Serbs, by converting to Christianity, transferred many of the features of their old god Perun, who controlled lightning and thunder, to St. Elijah. According to folk tradition, St. Elijah rides on a fiery car pulling four horses, from whose nostrils a flame erupts. The thunder is the rumbling of his car that drives him through the sky and clouds.
Saint Elijah was the glory of aviation in Serbia. The day of Holy Prophet Elijah is celebrated on August 2nd.
