The Apostle Thomas, also known as Judas Thomas, Judas Gemini or Thomas, was one of the twelve apostles of Christ. Known as the "unbelieving Thomas" for refusing to believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to the New Testament, when Christ appeared before him and offered to feel his wounds, Thomas exclaimed the words in which he was remembered, "My Lord, and my God!"
He was the only apostle believed to have preached beyond the borders of the then Roman Empire. He is known as the Apostle of Persia (Iran) and India. In the Syrian Oriental Orthodox Church, Thomas is known as the brother of Jesus who established churches in the East, especially in Edessa. Otherwise, there was a widespread tradition in early Christianity that Jesus had a twin brother, named Judas Thomas Didimos.
The apostle Thomas is attributed to the authorship of the noncanonical Gospel of Thomas.
