    Smatra se da je bio Grk, rodom iz Antiohije. Predanje tvrdi da se bavio živopisom i da je prvi naslikao ikone Isusa Hrista, Bogorodice i apostola Petra i Pavla. Te ikone su bile uzor svim kasnijim ikonama, zbog čega se sveti Luka smatra osnivačem hrišćanskog ikonopisa.
