Three Great Hierarchs were saints: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. St. Basil the Great is known as the great world and spiritual teacher of the church. St. Gregory the Theologian is dubbed as the Theologian because of his unmatched interpretation of dogma, and St. John Chrysostom is remembered as elusive preacher of the Gospel. They each have their own day of celebration, and this joint holiday was established in the 11th century during the reign of Emperor Alexius Comnenus. Once there was a debate among the people about who was the greatest of these three, but all the three saints appeared in dreams of John the bishop of the city of Ehheath. Then they told him that none of them was greater than the other, but that they were all equal and sent for human salvation. That is why Bishop John, cause all three have their celebration day in January, marked January 30th (February 12th on the new calendar) as a joint holiday, making them canons and troparia and thus establishing a new holiday of the Three Great Hierarchs.
In the Serbian regions, these saints are considered protectors of humans and animals from frost, cold and wicked winds. According to what kind of wind blows that day, it is predicted what time it will be during the year.
