Saint Evstatius (sometimes referred to as Saint Eustatius) for many years was a pagan himself. He served as a Roman commander in the 1st century AD in the time of the emperors of Titus and Trajan, and before being baptized as a Christian, his name was Plakida. However, although the conqueror, Plakida was a just and good man whom the people respected and loved. One of his great passions was hunting. When he once went into the woods, the lecture said he saw a deer with a bright cross on his horns. Plakida approached him without any fear, and then God appeared to him. After that, the commander went to the Christian priest and baptized with his wife and both sons by the name of Evstatius. When he returned to the woods to the place where he saw the deer, God addressed him and prophesied his hard life and suffering in the name of Christ, but also eternal glory.
From the third century AD to the present, his name was equated with the great martyrdom and the protector of the hunters.
