U toku cele druge polovine XIX veka on je najobilniji srpski pesnik, urednik mnogih listova i časopisa i jedan od najistaknutijih nacionalnih radnika.
Od svih srpskih pesnika, on je najdublje ušao u narod, bio najviše čitan i najviše voljen.
Završio je medicinu i do kraja života radio je dva posla: bio je lekar i pesnik.
Ostavio je poeziju koja ima trajne i neosporne vrednosti u srpskoj književnosti.
